Eureka College presents free Irish music concert featuring Turas, a traditional Irish band from Peoria
On Friday, April 5 at 7pm in Becker Auditorium of the Donald B. Cerf Center, Eureka College will present a free Irish Music Extravaganza featuring the guest traditional Irish band Turas from Peoria. The Eureka Chorale, Chamber Singers, and instrumental Chamber Ensemble will join Turas in performing Irish love songs, drinking songs, sea shanties, and dance tunes from Tell Me Ma and Wild Rover to The Parting Glass.
Meaning "trip" or "journey" in Gaelic, Turas represents the band's journey in bringing traditional Irish music to central Illinois. Formed in 2008 out of the traditional Irish session scene in Central Illinois, Turas has garnered a reputation for high quality musicianship paired with the excitement and fun that comes naturally in this style of music.
Turas is:
- Mike Bergstrom: bouzouki, guitar, vocals
- AnneMarie Brinton: vocals, guitar, percussion
- Jeff Calhoun: vocals, banjo, mandolin, guitar
- Lauri Gannon: whistle, bodhran, accordion, stomp board
- Sarah Riskind: fiddle, vocals (Director of Choral Activities at Eureka College)
- Rose Fahey Wright: flute, whistle, vocals
Directed by Dr. Sarah Riskind, the Eureka ensembles bring together students from a wide range of majors to perform classical, folk, jazz, pop, film, and video game music. This will be their first all-Irish concert!
The community is welcome to attend this free event.
