THE SOCIAL SCIENCES AT EUREKA

 

The Social Science major is appropriate for students who wish to prepare for careers in such areas as social work, social service, and journalism, as well as those preparing for graduate work in history, political science, social psychology, sociology, and law.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR A SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJOR

 

A minimum of 42 hours, in consultation with a faculty advisor within the division. Students sample courses from five specialty areas (Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology) according to the following schedule:

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION WITH A SOCIAL SCIENCE SPECIALIZATION

 

24 semester hours of coursework. Please refer to the Education section for a listing of required courses.



SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSES

 

270 Statistics II -- 3 hours
Prerequisite: MAT 260.
(Offered in alternate years.)
Intermediate-level course that provides an overview of analysis of variance, multiple comparison procedures, multiple regression, and exploratory factor analysis, as they are utilized in the social sciences. Additional techniques in structural and multivariate analysis may be covered as dictated by available time and student preparation needs.

 

450 Senior Defense -- 0 hours
Prerequisite: Senior standing.
Capstone experience required of all students completing the Social Science major. Students will develop a thesis in consultation with the Division Chair. The thesis will consist of a position statement that integrates at least two of the social science disciplines constituting the major and that is defended orally before a faculty panel. The panel, comprising the Chair and two additional Division members, will evaluate the defense on a pass-fail basis. The course may be repeated until passed.
