the ronald W. reagan leadership program
leadership starts here
Named for a Eureka alumnus who became one of the greatest world leaders of the twentieth century, the Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program is among the most innovative and opportunity-rich programs in the nation. Reagan Fellows receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship at Eureka College, as well as stipends to cover the Program's special travel and mentoring opportunities. In addition, Reagan Fellows benefit from distinctive opportunities to learn and practice leadership skills:
ONE-OF-A-KIND MENTORSHIPS AT LEADING INSTITUTIONS AROUND THE GLOBE
Each Reagan Fellow completes two on-site mentorships with prominent leaders of their choosing. In the past, these experiences have taken our Fellows to:
Chalet Belvue, Switzerland |
Center for Rainforest Studies, Australia |
The School for Field Studies, Mexico |
Houghton-Mifflin Publishers, Boston, MA |
Focus on the Family, Colorado Springs, CO |
Richmond University, London, England |
London Film Commission, England |
Cancer Research Center, University of Hawaii |
Israeli Centers for Holocaust Survivors, Jerusalem, Israel |
Old Mutare Hospital, Mutare, Zimbabwe |
FIRST YEAR, FELLOW-ONLY SPRING BREAK TRIPS TO DESTINATIONS SUCH AS REAGAN RELATED SITES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND WASHINGTON, DC.
These expense-paid trips expose Reagan Fellows to one-of-a-kind experiences only available through Eureka and the college's affiliations, while building a strong sense of camaraderie among Fellow cohorts.
THE ROLE OF A REAGAN FELLOW
In addition to meeting the expectations outlined for all Eureka students, Reagan Fellows are expected to live on campus, to maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, and to display to the College community the attributes of leadership, service, and active citizenship. Reagan Fellows are also expected to participate fully in all activities of the Program.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
- Six Reagan Fellows are named each year, chosen for their scholarly abilities, leadership accomplishments, and commitment to service.
- Semifinalists are invited to campus in February for a day-long, in-person interview process that becomes a central factor in the selection process. Notification of competition winners is made three weeks following the on-campus interviews.

"Every college has buildings and extracurriculars, equipment and supplies. But what will stick with you through the years is not the chair you sat in for freshman comp; it is the professor who helped you realize your passion in life and the friends who supported your efforts to reach it. By living and being involved at Eureka, I have found what community truly means."

Reagan Fellows |
Get to know
Nick Easley
Nick Easley '08 is a Ronald W. Reagan Fellow, attending Eureka College on a four-year
full-tuition fellowship. His major is sociology and psychology.
Nick has studied in Africa several times through the Ronald Reagan Leadership Program mentorships and the college’s International Health Care Development Program. After seeing flaws in some international aid organizations, he founded Strategic Sustainable Partnership Program Inc. to bring groups together to provide aid that will help impoverished areas to become self-sufficient and sustainable. The corporation is selling beads made by Ugandan women to benefit the women and their families and to help fund other projects in partnership with other aid organizations.
Easley currently is performing an internship with Water Partners International in Kenya, where he is studying ways to effectively bring safe water and sanitation to villagers.
He has also worked with organizations that provide loans and grants to small businesses in Africa.
Last year Easley brought the plight of Ugandan child soldiers to central Illinois with a showing of the documentary “Invisible Children” and presentations at area schools.
This past summer Easley attended the Public Policy and International Affairs Junior Summer Institute at University of California, Berkeley, which prepares students for leadership roles in public service.

Terry Vaughn
Another EC student already making a difference is Terry Vaughn '08. Terry, a central Illinois native, and future math teacher, decided to start a program that reaches out to innter-city youth at Peoria's Manual High School. The Reagan Fellowship Program provided the means to implement his dream.
He discovered his passion for inner-city education freshman year after reading and researching the subject over the summer. He brought his idea to Eureka professors in Fall 2005. The idea behind REACH UP (Rebuilding Educational Awareness and Contributing Hope to Undergraduate Prospectives) is to bring to light how real college is for high school students - even those who come from rough situations.
Vaughn hopes REACH UP puts into perspective what is possible to accomplish when you have the right people behind you. So far, this message of community is spreading and making quite an inpact.
