Convocation

Ivy Bowl

Greetings!

Pride…it comes in many forms. I am proud of my family, I am proud of my career, I am proud of my alma mater. I was recently blessed to have the unique privilege of having all three of these elements combine in one wonderful moment that took place during opening convocation this week. There is a unique joy that we at the college get to enjoy each year as we welcome the incoming freshmen and transfers to campus. Watching all of these students march into Rinker Theatre, down the graduation pathway where in four short years they will experience the satisfaction of commencement always gives me a chill. These students will soon begin to experience what we alumni, faculty, staff and current students already know. This is a very special place. Add that element to the pride of witnessing your own offspring embracing for her own, the place that you have held dear for 25 years. Hearing her express it in words and song to the campus community is a feeling of pride that truly overwhelmed me that day. (For clarification of the statement above, take a look at the Opening Convocation video link below and you will understand.)

~ Welcoming Remarks by Student Body President, Lauren Schwanke '14

That is why I want to encourage you, fellow alumni, to expose your children to your alma mater. It is truly, such a uniquely special place. The gratification that you will receive seeing their minds expand through liberal arts instruction and their hearts expand as they experience the personal relationships that are fostered at Eureka will make your heart burst with pride. The choice will be theirs, but if they don’t hear your stories, feel your pride or actually come and visit Eureka for themselves, they may miss out on experiencing our wonderful alma mater that has shaped lives for over 150 years.

Dr. Loren Logsdon, Professor Emeritus of English, has captured the spirit of Eureka College history in a special project he fondly calls the "Studs Terkel Project." The project is a collection of alumni memories and stories which weave a rich tapestry of the Eureka College experience during the '40s, '50s and '60s.
