EC Homecoming Royalty

Greetings!

February is the “Love” month. What do you love? I love many things: family, friends, music, …but one thing I am truly passionate about is the Rocky Mountains!!! I had the awesome, unexpected opportunity to go to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) this month while attending a family wedding. The road trip was LONG…14 hours….. but so well worth it. You can imagine that even the closest of family members might get a bit edgy after that long in the family van together. But the minute we entered RMNP all the road weary tension faded away. You see, RMNP is a very special place for the Schwanke family. It is the place we bonded as a family through many wonderfully exhilarating--yet challenging hikes, evening campfires and awe-inspiring moments we shared experiencing “God’s Country” at the top of Trail Ridge Road.
Where is your special place? What makes it so? Is it the beauty of the place, the people or the special memories made there? Is it the feeling of accomplishment that remains with you long after conquering a hard fought challenge there? I believe “Special Places” are a combination of all of the above.
Well, as you might imagine, RMNP isn’t the only special place for the Schwanke Family. Eureka College is the other. It is the place that started a long history of memories for our family and continues to do so everyday. I hope Eureka holds that special place in your heart and continues to do so as you reconnect as alumni. That is my wish for you today: that you will get a similar joy from your connection with your alma mater. If only Eureka were in the Rocky Mountains!!!!

Dr. Logsdon’s Studs Terkel Project Spotlight

Dr. Loren Logsdon, Professor Emeritus of English, has captured the spirit of Eureka College history in a special project he fondly calls the "Studs Terkel Project." The project is a collection of alumni memories and stories which weave a rich tapestry of the Eureka College experience during the '40s, '50s and '60s.

The book of these stories is available in the online EC Bookstore >

Sam Harrod, '62

How did I decide to go to Eureka College? I never thought about it. I always knew I would, so I did. It was never discussed. My grandfather graduated from Eureka, my father, myself and both of my sons. My brother Dan and probably thirty or forty other relatives graduated from EC. Not only my grandfather but also my grandmother graduated from here. That’s where they met. They had my father and three daughters, and they all graduated from Eureka. My mother had earned her RN before she came to Eureka College; she came here to complete her education...

Nancy Stevenson Harrod, '61

My stories about Eureka? Well I really liked Prof Rinker. I had him for eight hours of geology. And what stuck in my mind is that we went into the final and I studied like crazy for it, and it was strawberry shortcake; there was no written final. And it was such a wonderful treat. I loved Dr. Crowe.. When I came, I hadn't had any religion classes, so I had to take the required one, and I loved having that. I will not tell you who I didn't particularly like because that's not worth mentioning. I had an individual class with Dr. Raymond Miller, and it was on the bright child—the gifted child—for one hour credit...
