Aaron Phelan Receives SLIAC Post Graduate Scholarship
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Eureka College multi-sport student-athlete Aaron Phelan (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) has been chosen as the recipient of one of two 2010-11 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Post Graduate Scholarships, the league office announced earlier this month. The scholarships, selected by the conference’s Faculty Athletics Representatives based on the graduating student-athletes accomplishments in and out of the classroom, awards the recipients a financial stipend towards their first two years of graduate study.
A triple-major in biology, chemistry and computer science with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average, Phelan graduated from Eureka on May 14 and plans to attend the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Phelan played four years for the Eureka men’s tennis team, earning eight career victories. He also competed all four years as a member of the men’s swimming team and was a two-time SLIAC All-Academic honoree. He will likely earn the honor a third time when the Spring 2011 All-Academic team is announced in the coming weeks.
Phelan was also an active member of the Eureka College chapters of the Alpha Chi and Sigma Zeta math/science honor societies, tutoring students through the Learning Center. He also served as a volunteer on the emergency medical response team for Woodford County.
MacMurray volleyball player Kelli Ruppel was the other SLIAC student-athlete to receive the scholarship this year. The SLIAC has selected two student-athletes to receive the Post Graduate Scholarship Award every year since 2002-03. Phelan is the first Eureka student-athlete to receive the award since the Red Devils joined the conference prior to the 2006-07 academic year.
