Former Baseball Assistant Andrew Werner Makes MLB Debut

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Former Eureka College baseball pitching coach Andrew Werner made his Major League Baseball debut Wednesday night, earning the victory for the San Diego Padres in a 4-2 decision over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif.  Werner served as the Eureka pitching coach for the Red Devils’ St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament team in 2010.

The Washington, Ill. native helped the Red Devils to a school-record 19 victories and their first-ever appearance in the SLIAC Tournament in 2010.  Werner, along with 2010 SLIAC Coach of the Year Craig Gerdes, guided the Eureka pitching staff to 225 strikeouts in 40 games, the highest single-season mark by an EC staff since the turn of the century.

Werner, who signed with the Padres as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2011 season, allowed only two runs on four hits over 6.0 innings on Wednesday.  He added two strikeouts.

The left-hander was called up to the Padres earlier this week after posting a 3.70 earned-run average over 126.1 minor league innings between the San Antonio Missions (AA) and Tucson Padres (AAA) in 2012.  Prior to joining the Padres organization, Werner pitched for Evansville Otters and Windy City ThunderBolts of the independent Frontier League during 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Werner pitched collegiately for Illinois Central (2006-07) and NCAA Division II Indianapolis (2008-09).  He struck out 99 hitters in 88.0 innings during his senior campaign, helping the Greyhounds set a new school record with 516 punchouts.  As a prep standout at Washington, Werner was named to the All-Mid-Illini Conference First Team as a senior.  He also earned All-Area honors from the Peoria Journal Star.
