Red Devil bats heat up; Arkansas tour continues

CLARKSVILLE, AR. -- The Eureka baseball team returned to the field Wednesday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader, 17-4 and 16-9 to a strong University of the Ozarks club. Ozarks improved to 12-2 on the season, while EC fell to 0-5.

The Red Devils were led offensively by Alex Rosenbeck (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo), who went 4-for-6 with a run, two runs batted in and a walk and Mike Wagner (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), who drove in four runs going going
3-for-7 at the plate.

Ozarks walked away with game one as the Eagles were granted five bases on balls in a nine run first inning. Eureka got on the board in the top of the second with runs batted in from Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Wade Furrow (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley), but Ozarks tallied one more in the second and three in the third to pad the lead up to 13-2.

Game two saw the Red Devils break out with three runs in the top of the first keyed by a triple by Rosenbeck and double by Wagner only to fall victim to another big opening frame by the Eagles, who plated four runs in the bottom of the first.

Ozarks went ahead 14-4 before Eureka could trim the margin to five at 14-9 with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Wagner crushed a two-out, three-run homer for Eureka's three runs in the seventh, while Andy Hudec (Streamwood, Ill./HS) and Mike Johnson (Peoria, Ill./IVC) each knocked in a run in the eighth.

The Red Devils' scheduled doubleheader at Washington University of St. Louis for Friday, March 7 has been canceled. Instead, EC will take on Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. Thursday, March 6 in a doubleheader starting at Noon.
