EC ends Spring trip with loss in pitchers' duel
BATESVILLE, Ark. — Eureka received its best pitching effort of the season from Benji Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS), but the Red Devils fell in non-conference play to a stingy Lyon College ballclub 3-0. The game was played in harsh conditions, and the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called due to snow.
Cashdollar allowed only two base hits in the six inning complete game effort. He fanned four, though he issued five walks. Eureka (0-6) assisted the Lyon attack in the first inning by committing two errors as the Scots took a 2-0 lead. Lyon added an insurance marker in the second. Neither side could plate a run over the final five stanzas. The Scots improved to 3-0 versus NCAA opponents and 14-4 overall.
The Red Devils out-hit Lyon 3-2 with singles by Keith Moore (Hamilton, Ill./HS), Nick Knoblauch (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Kyle Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./HS). Lyon starter Brian Carr pitched into the seventh, striking out seven before he was relieved for the final two outs.
Sleet and rain fell during the opening game, picking up near the end. Game two was called with Lyon leading 2-0 in the third.
Eureka's next scheduled games are a doubleheader at Cornell College Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 pm.
