Moore of the same: Eureka suffers close L's to IC
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Playing their 10th and 11th consecutive games away from home to begin the season, the Eureka College Red Devils lost both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Illinois College Monday. The Blue Boys, who are predicted to win the South Division of the Midwest Conference, had to rally from behind to win both contests.
The Red Devils (1-10) got off to a fast start in the opening game by scoring two runs in the first inning. Nick Cox (Deer Creek, Ill./Deer Creek-Mackinaw) and Keith Moore (Hamilton, Ill./HS), who both singled with one out, raced home on a two-run double off the bat of Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS).
Illinois College (8-3) scored in only one inning off of EC pitcher Troy Burd (Peoria, Ill./Woodruff). But, that one inning proved to be enough as the Blue Boys had three tallies on two hits and an error in the third stanza to take a 3-2 advantage.
The Red Devils came close to tying it up in the fifth as Andy Hudec (Streamwood, Ill./HS) singled with one away, but he was eventually stranded on third base. EC also got the lead off man on with a single in the sixth, but he was erased on a double play.
Burd allowed three runs on seven hits (all singles) and a pair of walks in six innings for his first start of the season. EC left five runners on base, compared to seven for IC. Eureka was out-hit 7-6.
The Red Devils again scored first in the game two, but were unable to expand the lead or hold off the Illinois College attack. The game was scoreless until the fourth when Alex Rosenbeck (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) led off with a hit by pitch, and later put Eureka in front 1-0 as Illinois College was charged with two errors on the same play. The play was fitting for this game, as the two sides combined for seven defensive miscues.
Illinois College grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Clint Wherling hit a two-run home run. But that was all IC would get in the frame and Eureka battled back to tie the game in the sixth. Again it was Rosenbeck leading off by getting on base - this time on a walk. He was driven in on Tyler Glaub's (Metamora, Ill./HS) sacrifice fly, knotting the count at 2-2.
However, two errors in the bottom of the frame opened the door for a four-run Illinois College rally that put the game away at 6-2. Pat Soraghan started on the mound for Eureka. He struck out seven over five and one-third innings, allowing only three base hits. Moore, who has now hit safely in seven consecutive games, was 2-for-4 at the plate, and pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief. Benji Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS) singled and had two walks.
The Red Devils are scheduled to play their home opener at 1:00 pm Tuesday, March 25 as MacMurray College comes to Eureka to make up a SLIAC doubleheader postponed from March 18. The games will be Nos. 6 and 7 out of a stretch of eight games in six days.
