Eureka now 4-1 at home after loss to Blackburn
EUREKA — Eureka College lost at home for the first time this season and had its six-game conference winning streak snapped Wednesday afternoon, 7-3, at the hands of the Blackburn College Beavers. The Red Devils twice came back to tie the score only to see Blackburn take the lead for keeps in the seventh with three unearned tallies.
Clay McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) started the game for Eureka (6-11, 6-3 SLIAC), but left in the third inning after taking a batted ball off his ankle. Kyle Buchanan (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central), who pitched the remainder of the game for EC, limited Blackburn (5-15, 3-2 SLIAC) to just one run in the frame on a sacrifice fly after entering the game with one out and the bases loaded.
The Red Devils tied the count at 1-1 in the home-half of the third as Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) raced home when the relay throw on a potential double play sailed out of play.
Blackburn again loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, and then pulled out to a 3-1 advantage when
Eureka once again came right back in the bottom of the inning, this time with a two-out rally. The Red Devils put together three consecutive hits after the first to batters were retired. Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS), who singled to begin the rally, sprinted home on a double off the bat of Alex Rosenbeck (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo). Nick Knoblauch (Metamora, Ill./HS) then just missed a home run, knocking an RBI double off the rightfield fence to tie the game at 3-3.
The game seemed to swing in the sixth when Benji Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS) reached third base with no outs, but Eureka failed to get the go-ahead run home. Instead, Blackburn took a 6-3 lead in the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of errors and bunt singles. Savoie added a solo home run in the eighth to set the final score.
Blackburn had its lead off hitter reach base in six of the nine innings, totaled 12 hits and left nine on base. Eureka got its lead off man on in two innings, had five hits and left three on base. Brandon Freehill retired all nine batters he faced to pick up the win in relief for the Beavers. Buchanan allowed six runs (two earned) in six and two-thirds innings for EC. He struck out four and walked one.
Eureka will begin a three-game series with league-leading Webster University with a single, nine-inning game at home Saturday, April 5 at 3:00 pm.
