Opportunistic Red Devils hand Webster 1st SLIAC loss
EUREKA — Eureka College knocked the last remaining team in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play from the ranks of the unbeaten Saturday afternoon, topping Webster University 10-7 at Henry Sand Field. Winners of the last three SLIAC Post Season Tournaments, the Gorloks had begun league play at
After the Gorloks stranded the first two of their 13 runners on base on the day in the top of the first, Eureka took a 3-0 lead on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the frame. Keith Moore (Hamilton, Ill./HS) and Mike Wagner (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), who reached base on a single and hit by pitch respectively, came home on a two-run double hit by first baseman Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS). Alex Rosenbeck (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) then lined a double to the fence in left center to make the score 3-0.
Rosenbeck would go on to knock in a run his next two times at bat as well. He ripped an RBI single into left to give EC its three-run lead back at 4-1 in a controversial bottom of the third in which Webster Head Coach Bill Kurich is ejected for arguing that Wagner had been hit by the ball on his bunt single.
The play seemed to fire up Webster as the Gorloks came back to tie the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. Webster had a good chance to take the lead, but with runners on second and third and only one out, Eureka pitcher Benji Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS) got out of the inning without further damage. He went on to shut Webster down over the next three frames, giving the Red Devils time to pull ahead again.
Cashdollar helped his own cause in the fifth, hitting the first of consecutive doubles over the head of the center fielder to begin the inning. Wagner hit the second two-bagger, and came home when Rosenbeck later added sacrifice fly to make the score 6-4. Eureka increased the lead to 7-4 when Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) crushed his first home run as a Red Devil over the wall in the bottom of the seventh.
The Red Devils seemed to put the game on ice as the Webster bullpen imploded for three walks and a hit batter during a three-run Eureka rally that featured only one hit. When the eighth inning finally ended, Eureka had its largest lead of the day at 10-5.
Those runs wound up being the difference as Webster made things tense in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs and getting the tying runner to first base. The bases were loaded on two walks and a single before an out was recorded. Eureka pitcher Clay McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) then retired the next two batters, and earned the save by getting David Umfleet to foul out to third after allowing runs to score on an infield single and walk.
Benji Cashdollar got the win for Eureka, giving up five runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings. He did not strike anyone out through hit six frames, then struck out the side in the seventh. Wagner reached base all five up for EC, going 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch. Rosenbeck was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and Benji Cashdollar scored twice after also going 2-for-3.
The Red Devils, who were credited with five sacrifices in the game, took advantage of their opportunities, knocking in runners from third base in five out of six chances and leaving only six runners on base compared to 13 for Webster.
Webster will host Eureka for a doubleheader Sunday, April 6 at 1:00 pm to complete the three game series.
