April 16, 2008 Eureka aces LCC with 21-run outburst capping DH sweep
LINCOLN, Ill. — The Eureka College baseball reached double figures in wins for the first time this decade after a wild doubleheader sweep of Lincoln Christian College on the road Tuesday afternoon. The Red Devils overcame a 10-run rally by the Preachers to squeak out a 16-15 win in game one, then amassed a 21-11 victory in the nightcap. That game marked the first time in 230 contests that Eureka scored at least
Eureka (10-15) cruised out to an 8-1 lead in game one by scoring in each of the first four innings. Jake Leake (Lexington, Ill./Normal West) capped a three-run EC first with a two out two-RBI single. He later led off the third inning with a double, which was followed by run scoring hits by Troy Burd (Peoria, Ill./Woodruff) and Wade Furrow (El Paso, Ill./HS).
The Red Devils carded two runs in the second inning after the first three batters reached base on singles. Chris Reatherford (Peoria Heights, Ill./HS) was credited with the only RBI in the frame.
But Lincoln Christian (1-13) roared back into the game in the fifth, sending 15 batters to the plate and totaling 10 runs for an 11-8 lead. The Preachers, who hit .435 (10-for-23) with runners in scoring position for the game, took the lead on a three-run homer hit by relief pitcher Jay Hild.
Facing a deficit for the first and only time on the day, the Red Devils did not panic. Eureka pieced together a seven-run rally in the top of the sixth to go back ahead 15-11. Benji Cashdollar's (Morton, Ill./HS) bases loaded walk tied the game at 11 before Andy Hudec (Streamwood, Ill./HS) lifted EC to a 13-11 edge with a two-run single to left field. Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) next added a pinch hit RBI single. He was then thrown out on the back end of a double steal, allowing Hudec to score the final run of the rally. Eureka sent five pinch hitters to the plate in the frame. They combined to go 2-for-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch.
While Lincoln Christian failed on a squeeze play attempt in the sixth resulting in an inning ending double play, Benji Cashdollar executed one perfectly for EC in the seventh to make the score 16-12. The game was far from over, though. Lincoln Christian scored three times in the seventh on two hits and two errors, eventually getting the tying runner to first base. Relief pitcher Keith Moore (Hamilton, Ill./HS), who recorded his first win at Eureka, got the final out on a ground out to third.
Moore tossed the final 2.2 innings, striking out three. Pat Soraghan started for EC. He started strong, surrendering just one run and three hits through the first four innings.
The Eureka offense never let off the throttle in game two. Nick Knoblauch (Metamora, Ill./HS) went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI and Kyle Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./HS) knocked in five runs, scored twice and included his third home run of the season among his 3-for-6 game at the plate.
The Red Devils scored five runs in the first and five more in the second to open up a cushy 10-3 advantage. Eureka, which was 10-for-19 with runners in scoring position, out-hit Lincoln Christian 17-6. Both teams made five errors.
Nick Cox (Morton, Ill./Dee-Mack) and Mike Wagner (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) each drove in three runs, while Moore scored four runs. Cox, who went 2-for-2, drew three of Eureka's nine walks in the game en route to reaching base safely all six times up.
Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS) earned his first college win, pitching four innings of relief and no-hitting the Preachers through three frames. Glaub nailed down the win by striking out six of the nine batters he faced over 2.2 innings.
The Red Devils will play their first home game in 11 days when they host conference rival Fontbonne University for SLIAC a doubleheader Wednesday, April 16. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Henry Sand Field in Eureka.
