Rosenbeck drives in 3; EC still looking for spot in tournament
GREENVILLE — Eureka College lost both ends of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Greenville College Saturday, 10-3 and 7-3, tossing the final playoff spot in the conference tournament up for grabs heading into the final week.
The Red Devils (15-18, 12-10 SLIAC) had been in solid position, but Greenville (16-15, 11-9 SLIAC) has reeled off five consecutive wins over a four day span to catch Eureka in the standings. The two squads will meet again in Eureka on Senior Day May 1 for a nine-inning game. The Red Devils will be idle until then, but if the Panthers win their three games prior to that (they host second place Maryville April 28 and eighth place Principia for a doubleheader April 29), they will have already clinched the final spot.
Eureka took an early 1-0 lead in game one after Keith Moore (Hamilton, Ill./HS) led off the game with a double, moved to third on Benji Cashdollar's (Morton, Ill./HS) hit and came home on an RBI ground ball by Mike Wagner (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita).
Greenville tied the game at 1-1 in the second, then took the lead for keeps in the third on a two-run single by Garrett Cornman. The Panthers added two more in the fourth before Alex Rosenbeck (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) belted a two-run homer in the fifth to get EC within 5-3.
Greenville responded with three runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the frame for an 8-3 advantage and went on for win by seven.
The game snapped Eureka's streak of four consecutive victories and three straight games with at least 10 runs. The difference in the game came with runners in scoring position as EC managed just a .091 average (1-for-11), while Greenville hit .615 (8-for-13). Consequently, Eureka left eight on base compared to six for Greenville.
Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) had two of the Red Devils' eight hits, including his fourth double of the year. Brian Stoff led the Panthers' attack with a 3-for-4 game and three runs driven in.
In the nightcap, Greenville amassed the first nine hits and seven runs of the contest. Eureka outscored the Panthers 3-0 the rest of the way, but the 7-0 deficit proved too large to overcome.
Bryan Hobbie hit a two-run single in the opening frame and a run scoring triple in the third to lead the Greenville attack. The Panthers got two unearned tallies in the second as well.
The Red Devils, who had scored at least six runs in each of the previous 10 games entering play Saturday, began chipping away at the lead in the fourth as Wagner led off with a single, moved to third on an error and scored on an RBI grounder by Rosenbeck.
Kyle Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./HS) and Mike Johnson (Peoria, Ill./IVC) set the table leading off the fifth with a walk and single respectively. Koerner would later score on a wild pitch, while Johnson was plated on a Cashdollar single, both coming with two outs. That brought the Red Devils to within 7-3, but they could not get any closer over the final two stanzas.
Cashdollar shutout Greenville on one hit over the final three innings, though he was still tagged with his second loss in eight starts versus SLIAC opponents. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits, no walks and three strikeouts over six innings. The Red Devils were held to three hits in the game, their lowest output since March 22.
Eureka's next game will be Thursday, May 1 at 3:00 pm versus Greenville. It will be Senior Day for three Red Devil veterans.
