Baseball Team Awards Announced at Banquet

The Eureka College E-Tribe Baseball Banquet was held Sunday afternoon, where Red Devils coach Mike McDonald announced his team awards for the 2008 season.

Junior second baseman Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) took home both Team MVP and Most Improved honors.  Glaub led the Red Devils with .376 batting average, .588 slugging percentage and seven stolen bases in 31 games played.  He scored 24 runs, drove in 23 and hit five double, two triples and three home runs.  In St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, Glaub ranked fifth in batting average (.418), sixth in slugging percentage (.687) and ninth in on base percentage (.474).  He also pitched 10.1 innings in parts of five games on the season, with no walks, 13 strikeouts and a 3.48 ERA.  Compared to his first season at Eureka in 2007, Glaub improved his batting average 168 points and his ERA by 3.13 runs.

The Best Newcomer Award went to Benji Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS).  A transfer from Illinois Central College and Western Illinois University, he played both outfield and pitcher for Eureka.  Cashdollar led the Red Devil starters with a 4.12 ERA and 5-4 record in 10 appearances.  In conference play, he tied for the league lead in wins with a mark of 5-2, while recording the second most strikeouts (39) and seventh lowest ERA (3.67).  He tossed two shutouts on the year versus MacMurray on March 26 and Principia on April 22.  With the bat, he hit .294, ranking second on the squad with 17 walks and .450 on base percentage.

Eureka finished with an overall record of 16-18 and a SLIAC mark of 13-10, good for fifth place in the conference.  The Red Devils were 10-2 at home en route to their best record this decade.  Their 16 victories equaled the number of wins for EC from the previous four seasons combined.

Eureka College athletic banquets are sponsored by the EC athletic department in conjunction with E-Tribe.  Each year, there are banquets for fall, winter and spring sports.  The baseball banquet was the last of a series of three for spring sports this year.
