Red Devils strand 9 runners in 3-2 loss in spring trip finale
Eureka College endured a frustrating defeat in the Spring trip finale Monday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Presentation College. Pitcher Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) turned in an outstanding game in his first start in an EC uniform, but the Red Devil bats failed in six tries with the bases full and left nine runners on base.
All of the runs scored in the game came in the fifth inning. Presentation (3-0) clean up hitter Zach Lagred, who went 4-for-4 in the game, doubled for the second time on the day leading off the frame. He was followed by a another double and two singles that lifted the Saints to a 2-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt, an error allowed what turned out to be the winning run cross the plate. That was the only error of the game for the Red Devils (0-3-1) defense, which turned three double plays in the game, including one in the fifth to escape further damage.
Keith Moore (Hamilton, Ill./HS) had the only hit in Eureka's two-run bottom of the fifth inning, but it was a big one. After Tyler Glaub (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS) had been plunked back-to-back by Presentation starter Dustin Pickrel, Moore clubbed an RBI double to left, scoring Glaub. After a walk to Benji Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./HS), Nick Eeten (Eureka, Ill./HS) knocked in a second run with an RBI fielder's choice.
That would unfortunately be as close as Eureka would get to seeing any success with the bases loaded. In the opening inning, the first three EC batters, Moore, Benji Cashdollar and Eeten, all reached base by way of a single, walk and hit by pitch respectively, but back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out short-circuited the threat.
Trailing 3-2 in the seventh inning, the Red Devils again filled the bases with one away only to see a pair of strikeouts get Presentation out of trouble. Pickrel won his bouts with both wildness and the Red Devils, giving up two runs in six innings despite issuing three walks and hitting six EC batters. Sam Heintzman came on to toss the final three frames without giving up a hit. He retired the final eight Red Devils he faced to earn the save.
Moore went 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI. Mike Wagner (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) tallied the other hit for EC. McConkey pitched the complete nine innings, striking out four and walking just one. He gave up three runs, but only two were earned.
The Red Devils' doubleheader versus Presentation slated for March 11 was rained out. Eureka will next begin its conference schedule with a doubleheader at MacMurray College Tuesday, March 17 at 1:00 pm.
