Unlucky 7s spell doom in series finale at Greenville

Boxscore

The Red Devils baseball team fell victim to a seven-run Greenville College bottom of the seventh in a 12-2 defeat on the road in conference play Thursday.  Eureka faced an early 5-0 deficit, but rallied back to get within 5-2.

Greenville (11-21, 9-9 SLIAC) starter Andy Rincker retired the first 13 Red Devils (6-17-1, 6-11 SLIAC) he faced, but worked into trouble in the fifth with back-to-back bases on balls to Nick Knoblauch (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Mike Wagner (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita).  They both wound up crossing the plate as Mike Hubbard (Wataga, Ill./ROWVA) tallied Eureka's first hit with a single to center and Justin Fravell (East Peoria, Ill./HS) followed with another RBI single that brought EC to within 5-2.  For Hubbard, it was his first career hit and run batted in.

The Panthers, who won their ninth consecutive game after beginning league play 0-9, took the early lead with three runs in the first, two of which came about due to an error.  They strung together a walk and two hits after the first two batters fanned in the second, then got a home run from Daniel Covert in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

Nick Eeten (Eureka, Ill./HS) came on to pitch two scoreless frames of relief to allow Eureka time to get back in the game.  He struck out two and allowed just one hit while the Red Devils were able to slice the deficit to three.

Eureka was not able to get any closer, however.  Greenville, which has scored at least seven runs in eight of the nine wins during the winning streak, erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning alone on six hits.

Rincker allowed just the two singles and two walks in the fifth to EC.  He struck out three in the complete game win.  Clay McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley) started for the Red Devils, striking out four in three innings.  He allowed five runs (three earned) on five base hits.

Eureka will open a five-game homestand Saturday, April 25 with a doubleheader against Webster University beginning at 2:00 pm.  It will be Senior Day for six Red Devils, who will be recognized prior to the first contest.  The Gorloks are a perfect 20-0 in conference play, and are four wins away from becoming the first team in 12 years to go undefeated in the SLIAC, but they lost in their last visit to Henry Sand Field, 10-7 last season.
