Baseball Falls short at Spalding, 4-1
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Eureka College baseball team opened its 24-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule at Spalding on Saturday night, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Golden Eagles at Derby City Field in Louisville, Ky.
The host Golden Eagles got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Derek Ferch started the frame with a solo home run for a 1-0 advantage. Three batters later, Kyle Just singled to score Jeremy Barr for the 2-0 cushion.
The SU lead swelled to 4-0 before the Red Devils were able to get on the board in the top of the eighth. Junior right fielder Eric Lopez (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes H.S.) singled home senior Mitch Johnson (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest H.S./Greensboro), who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Lopez’s run-scoring single brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out, but back-to-back popouts and a strikeout ended the threat.
The Red Devils were limited to six hits for the 9-inning contest, and a ninth-inning triple from Kamaron Mason (Fisher, Ill./Fisher H.S.) was the Red Devils’ only extra-base hit of the night. Senior pitcher Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) went the distance on the mound, allowing only three earned runs over 8.0 innings.
Eureka and Spalding will bring their three-game SLIAC weekend series to a close on Sunday with an 11 a.m. CT doubleheader in Louisville.
