Eureka Baseball Opens Season With Doubleheader Split

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Eureka College baseball team opened the 2010 season Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader with Southwestern Assemblies of God in Fort Worth, Texas.  The Red Devils posted a 10-7 victory in game two, but dropped a 5-1 decision in the opener.

Eureka jumped to an 9-0 lead in the first inning of the second game.  Eureka junior catcher Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central) delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run double to give the Red Devils a 3-0 lead.  Hess finished the game 2-for-3, and junior first baseman Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) added three hits, including a double.  Sophomore starting pitcher Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) earned the victory for Eureka, allowing three earned runs on three hits in four innings of work.  He struck out three Lions.

In game one, Hess hit a solo home run in his first game as a Red Devil to force a 1-1 tie in the top of the third inning.  The Lions responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good.  Senior hurler Clay McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) took the loss for Eureka, but struck out the side in the first inning on his way to five strikeouts for the game.

Tuesday’s doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Dallas, but was moved to the artificial surface at Southwest Christian High School in Fort Worth after heavy rainfall forced cancellations on Monday.  Eureka will continue its season-opening spring break trip on Wednesday with a noon doubleheader against LeTourneau in Longview, Texas.
