Eureka Takes Rubber Game From Blackburn, 6-4
CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka College baseball team earned its fifth St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the 2012 season on Wednesday afternoon, posting a 6-4 victory over host Blackburn in Carlinville, Ill. The win gives the Red Devils the season series win over the Beavers, as the two squads split a doubleheader in Eureka last Wednesday.
After Blackburn scored four times in the home half of the eighth inning to force a 4-4 tie, Eureka senior center fielder Michael Hammerstrand (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) delivered a two-out, two-run triple to break the deadlock and score Kevin Dooley (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S./Spoon River) and Eric Lopez (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes H.S./Lake County) as the go-ahead runs. Both Dooley and Lopez singled after a strikeout and a flyout started the inning.
Eureka put together a 4-0 advantage earlier in the afternoon. Hammerstrand opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double to score Dooley for a 1-0 cushion. Seniors Mike Daxenbichler (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.) and Eric Cuevas (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Curie H.S./Roosevelt) drove in runs later in the inning.
The lead became 4-0 when senior starting pitcher Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) led off the third inning with his sixth career home run.
The Beavers rallied in the eighth to force the 4-4 tie. Shortstop Vinnie Burk started the outburst with a one-out bunt single and later scored on Ty Fauver’s two-run single to trim the EC lead to 4-2. Jon Lowry later added a sacrifice fly before Fauver scored from third base on a passed ball to force the 4-4 tie.
Blackburn ultimately brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but Eureka sophomore reliever Bryan Meyer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap H.S.) recorded a strikeout to end the threat and give the Red Devils the victory. Meyer earned the victory in relief.
Dooley, Hammerstrand and Lopez each collected two hits to drive Eureka’s 11-hit effort. McConkey yielded three earned runs in 7.1 innings in a no-decision. He struck out five and walked only two.
The Red Devils will return to Henry Sand Field for a three-game SLIAC series with Principia beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
