Greenville Comes Back to Beat Eureka Baseball, 9-8
GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka College baseball team jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first inning of Tuesday’s St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Greenville, but the Panthers slowly battled back and eventually broke an 8-8 tie with a run in the ninth inning for walk-off victory over the Red Devils.
The first five batters of the game reached base for Eureka, who got on the board thanks to a two-run single from junior first baseman Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman Aaron Tolson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian H.S.) and senior outfielder Nick Eeten (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) added run-scoring hits in the frame for Eureka, who scored seven runs on five hits for a 7-0 lead.
Greenville scored once in the first inning and twice again in the third to trim its deficit to 7-3. Eureka got a little insurance in the top of fourth on a sacrifice fly from Cashdollar, but the Panthers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-5.
The Red Devils held on to the lead until the eighth inning when Greenville’s Stefan Neece completed the comeback with a two-run home run to force an 8-8 tie. The Panthers won the game in the bottom of the ninth on Adam Wallace’s RBI double for the 9-8 win.
Junior catcher Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central) led the Eureka offense with a 3-for-5 effort. Cashdollar finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
The Red Devils will try to get back on track in a three-game series at new SLIAC member Spalding this weekend in Louisville, Ky. Eureka will play the Golden Eagles twice Saturday starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
