Red Devils Drop Season Finale to Spalding, 12-2
EUREKA, Ill. – Spalding scored four runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Eureka College and eventually pulled away for a 12-2 league win over the Red Devils at Henry Sand Field. Wednesday’s contest marked the final game of the 2011 season for Eureka.
A single and back-to-back walks to start the game loaded the bases for Spalding (23-11, 15-4 SLIAC) catcher Steven Schanz, who pulled a two-run double just inside the bag down the left field line for an early 2-0 lead. Bobby McKee drew a bases loaded walk and Schanz later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors.
Eureka (11-25, 7-17 SLIAC) answered with an RBI walk from senior second baseman Aaron Tolson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian H.S.) in the bottom half of the inning. After Spalding got the run back in the second inning to stretch the lead back to four runs (5-1), Grant DeWitt (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County H.S.) lined an infield single to score senior catcher Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central) in the third inning to cut the Spalding advantage to 5-2.
Spalding added two more runs in the fourth inning when Derek Ferch scored on a Eureka throwing error and Jordan Messex’s sacrifice fly for a 7-2 lead. The Red Devils wouldn’t score again, and Spalding tacked on five more runs over the next three innings to win by the 10-run rule.
DeWitt and junior third baseman Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) collected two hits apiece to pace the Eureka attack. Five different pitchers made an appearance for the Red Devils. Ferch and Bryan Clemmons each had two hits to lead an 11-hit outburst for the Golden Eagles.
Wednesday’s loss ends Eureka’s season with an 11-25 overall record and a 7-17 SLIAC mark.
