Solid Pitching Helps Monmouth Top Eureka, 5-1

Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Eureka College junior first baseman Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and freshman third baseman Tanner Schreck (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville H.S.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, but Monmouth received a solid outing from starting pitcher Corey Gruber on its way to a 5-1 victory over the Red Devils, Thursday afternoon as Glasgow Field in Monmouth.

The hosts struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning when Terry Davis hit a two-run double off Eureka starter John Berns (Herscher, Ill./Herscher H.S.).  The Red Devils answered with their only run of the day in the top half of the second inning on Cashdollar’s deep double to right field to score Schreck from first base.  A pair of strikeouts by Gruber ended the threat with Cashdollar stranded at second and the Fighting Scots in front, 2-1.

Monmouth’s Tom Shaver drove in three runs in his next three at bats over the next four innings against Berns, including an RBI double in the 5th inning to push Monmouth in front, 5-1.   Only two of the five runs allowed by Berns were earned.  He allowed seven hits and struck out one through five innings in his first career start.  Gruber allowed one run on three hits through eight innings to pick up his second victory of the season.

Eureka reliever Charles Sadowski (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) entered the game in the sixth inning and did not allow a hit in three innings of work.  He struck out three and walked one.

Eureka will open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Saturday against defending regular season SLIAC champion Webster at 2 p.m.  The Red Devils and Gorloks will conclude their three-game series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
