Webster Takes SLIAC Doubleheader From Eureka

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning of the first game of Saturday’s St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Webster, but the three-time defending league champion Gorloks scored 19 runs over the final four innings for a 19-2 win, Saturday afternoon at Henry Sand Field.  The Gorloks extended their regular season SLIAC win streak to 32 games with a 15-0 triumph in the nightcap.

In the opener, Eureka (5-8, 0-2 SLIAC) took advantage of a Webster defensive miscue in the top of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead.  Freshman third baseman Tanner Schreck (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville H.S.) drew a two-out walk and later scored from first base when junior first baseman Tim Cashdollar (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) lifted a towering fly ball to left field that was dropped by Webster’s Cody Stevenson.  The Red Devils made it 2-0 in the third inning on an RBI single from junior catcher Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) that scored senior Nick Eeten (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.), who led off the inning with an infield single.

Webster (8-5, 2-0 SLIAC) took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning against Eureka starter Clay McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.).  Webster shortstop Nathan Shelton delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-run single to left field to score Craig Schaefer and Joe Biagini.  The Gorloks plated three more runs in the fifth inning for a 6-2 lead.  Dakota Huey led off the frame with a solo home run before Shelton recorded another two-run single.

The Gorloks put the game out of reach with a 10-run sixth inning for a 16-2 advantage.  Webster collected eight hits in the inning, and 11 of the first 12 batters reached base before Eureka reliever Greg Osman (Macon, Ill./Decatur Eisenhower H.S.) retired two consecutive Gorloks to end the inning.  Webster added three more runs in the seventh inning to set the final score at 19-2.

Eeten, Hess and freshman John Berns (Herscher, Ill./Herscher H.S.) recorded hits in game one for Eureka.

The visitors snagged an early 3-0 lead in the nightcap behind a three-run double from Biagini in the first inning.  The Gorloks scored multiple runs in four of the seven innings during the contest, eventually stretching their lead to 15-0 thanks to a six-run sixth inning.  Victor Valdez and Schaefer homered during the game for Webster.

Hess collected two more singles in game two to end the day 3-for-5.  Junior catcher Nick Cox (Morton, Ill./Dee-Mack H.S.) recorded his first hit of the season with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Red Devils and Gorloks will conclude the three-game SLIAC series with a single contest Sunday at noon in Eureka.
