Webster Tops Eureka in Series Opener, 7-1
SAUGET, Ill. – The Eureka College baseball team took an early lead in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Webster Saturday, but the Gorloks scored seven unanswered runs in the final seven innings for a 7-1 victory in the opener of the three-game series at GCA Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
The Red Devils struck first for a 1-0 lead in the top of third inning on an RBI single from junior third baseman Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.). The single scored Mike Daxenbichler (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.), who had singled to leadoff the contest and moved to third on a sacrifice and wild pitch.
Webster promptly answered in the bottom of the inning when Cody Stevenson scored after the Red Devils misplayed Anthony Genna’s batted ball with one out in the inning. Paul Kienker doubled later in the frame, but Eureka starting pitcher Bryan Meyer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap H.S.) retired back-to-back batters to end the inning with the 1-1 tie intact.
The Gorloks took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning. A double and a walk put two runners on for Stevenson, who drove both runners in with a two-run single for a 3-1 lead. Webster added two more runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to push its lead to 7-1.
McConkey and senior catcher Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central) collected two hits apiece for the Red Devils. Meyer allowed five earned runs over 5.0 innings before giving way to freshman reliever Nate Louis (Putnam, Ill./ Henry-Senachwine H.S.). The Red Devils stranded 11 runners during the game and left the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
The Red Devils and Gorloks will conclude their three-game SLIAC series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday in Sauget.
