Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Webster avenged Monday’s series-opening defeat with two league victories over the Eureka College baseball team, earning a 10-0 victory over the Red Devils in the opener before posting an 8-4 triumph in game two, Tuesday afternoon at Henry Sand Field.  The doubleheader sweep gave the Gorloks a series win in the three-game conference set.

The Gorloks (24-10, 16-2 SLIAC) used an efficient offensive attack to earn the victory in game one.  Mike Rainbolt’s two-out RBI single scored Tom Henke in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 advantage.  The visitors stretched their lead to 2-0 in the second when Mitchell Bonds crushed an 0-2 delivery from Eureka sophomore starter Kyle Kiesewetter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) over the left-field fence.

Webster put the game out of reach with consecutive three-run innings to lead 8-0 after four.  Cody Stevenson led off the third inning with a solo homer before Matt Moore tacked on a two-run single for a 5-0 cushion.  The lead became 8-0 in the fourth inning on run-scoring hits from Stevenson and Rainbolt.  Henke picked up an RBI single and later scored on a balk in the sixth for a 10-0 advantage.

The offensive outburst was more than enough for WU starter Mike Gebhardt, who scattered four hits over 7.0 innings to earn his first victory of the spring.  He threw 100 pitches, striking out seven and walking three.  Stevenson led Webster’s 16-hit attack with a 4-for-4 showing out of the leadoff spot.  He also compiled three stolen bases in the victory.

Eureka (10-23, 8-13 SLIAC) sophomore catcher Trevor Teal (Delavan, Ill./Delavan H.S.), fresh off a 5-for-5 performance in Monday’s win, recorded two of Eureka’s four hits.  Seniors Blake McConkey (Fairview, Ill./Spoon River Valley H.S.) and Eric Cuevas (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Curie H.S./Roosevelt) also hit safely in the game one loss.

The Gorloks continued the momentum early in game two, striking six times in the second inning for a 6-0 lead.  The Gorloks sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame, as Stevenson, Taylor Stoulp and Henke each recorded two-run hits.  Eureka promptly answered with three runs of its own to cut the deficit in half during the bottom half of the inning.  After a pair of walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with two outs, Cuevas drilled a three-run triple to left field, clearing the bases for a 6-3 Eureka deficit.

The Red Devils made it 6-4 in the fourth thanks to some shaky Webster defense.  Eureka senior center fielder Michael Hammerstrand (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) reached on a bunt single to begin the inning before ultimately scoring from third base on a failed pickoff attempt from Webster catcher Dustin List.

Eureka was unable to claw any closer in the final five innings.  The Gorloks got two insurance runs in the seventh to set the final score at 8-4.

Cuevas had two hits for the Red Devils in the nightcap.  Freshman reliever Robby Cooper (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonnell Central H.S.) fired 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of Teal, who yielded eight earned runs in a career-high 7.0 innings pitched.

Eureka will continue its busy stretch of SLIAC contests Wednesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Greenville.  The Red Devils must sweep both games from the Panthers to remain in contention for a SLIAC Tournament berth.
