Westminster Tops Eureka to Win SLIAC Series

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior catcher Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central) clobbered his eighth home run of the season and the 21st homer of his Eureka career on a solo shot in the third inning on Senior Day, but visiting Westminster scored six runs on six hits in the first inning to take the rubber game of a three-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series with a 13-1 win over the Red Devils, Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (18-17, 13-9 SLIAC) put their first three batters of the game on base in front of cleanup hitter V.J. Reynolds, who pulled a 3-2 pitch down the left field for a two-run double and a 2-0 advantage.  Matt Mallette, Justin Becker and Monte Gibbs drove in runs later in the frame and Westminster carried a 6-0 lead into the second inning.

Westminster made it 11-0 one inning later with a five-run second inning.  The Blue Jays collected only three hits during the inning, but took advantage of a Eureka error in the outfield to push their lead to double-digits.

Hess crushed the first pitch he saw in his second at-bat with two outs in the third inning to get the hosts on the board.  The Red Devils (9-24, 5-16 SLIAC) threatened again in the fourth inning, loading the bases behind two singles and a walk with two outs, but Westminster starting pitcher Tyler Ten Eyck escaped the jam on a fielder’s choice at third base.

Eureka freshmen Trevor Teal (Delavan, Ill./Delavan H.S.) and Seth Leverenz (Mackinaw, Ill./Dee-Mack H.S.) combined to work 4.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

Sunday’s game was played on the campus of Eureka Middle School after overnight rainfall forced unplayable field conditions at Henry Sand Field.  Eureka will close its regular season this week when SLIAC leader Spalding visits for a three-game series starting with a single game Tuesday afternoon at Henry Sand Field.
