NORMAL, Ill. – The Eureka College cross country team opened its 2011 season on Friday, as seven different Red Devils set new personal-best times at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Illinois State at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill.

Sophomore Amanda Schreck (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville H.S.) led all Eureka women’s runners at the event with a 5K time of 22:30, shattering her previous career-best time by nearly two full minutes.  She finished 211th overall and 157th among non-Division I competitors.  Senior Meghan Campbell (Princeton, Ill./Olive Branch H.S.) (24:42) and junior Shelbi Rodgers (Batavia, Ill./Batavia H.S.) (25:56) also set new personal-best times on Friday.

On the men’s side, sophomore Zach Ahrends (Graymont, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) narrowly missed a personal-best time but led the Red Devils with an 8K time of 27:47.  His time was good enough for 204th place overall.  Senior Nathan Pritzker (Morton, Ill.) turned his best career performance in an 8K race with a time of 31:49.

Friday’s race included 35 women’s teams and 34 men’s teams from the state of Illinois.  The 69 teams represented the three divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).  Illinois State won the women’s team title, while Division III member North Central (Ill.) claimed the men’s crown.

Eureka will return to competition on Friday, Sept. 23 when the Red Devils participate in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.  The race is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
