Eureka Football Picked Fifth in Preseason UMAC Poll

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Eureka College football team has been picked to finish fifth in the nine-team Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, according to a coaches’ poll released by the league office Monday afternoon.  Greenville received three of a possible nine first-place votes to be picked as the preseason favorite for the second consecutive season.

Eureka, entering its fourth season as an associate member of the UMAC, received 33 points to secure fifth place in the poll that was conducted earlier this month.  The fifth-place prediction is the highest mark for the Red Devils since the league began its current non-divisional format in 2010.  Eureka went 4-5 in the conference last season to finish sixth among 10 teams.  Presentation, which played its inaugural football season in 2011 as a member of the UMAC, has dropped its affiliation with the conference.

Greenville received 58 points to edge defending league champion St. Scholastica as the preseason favorite.  St. Scholastica earned three first-place votes for 57 points, while Westminster secured the remaining three votes for 55 points and third place in the poll.

Northwestern (Minn.) was picked fourth with 42 points, followed by Eureka (33), Minnesota Morris (29), Martin Luther (24), MacMurray (14) and Crown (12).

Each UMAC team will play eight conference games throughout the 2012 schedule with the conference’s regular season champion moving on to the NCAA playoffs via the league’s automatic qualifier.

Eureka will open the campaign on the road at longtime non-conference rival Knox on Sept. 1 in the first annual Lincoln Bowl in Galesburg, Ill. at 1 p.m.  The eight-game UMAC schedule begins Sept. 8 at defending league champion St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.  The Red Devils will host their home opener on Sept. 22 against first-time opponent and Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Simpson at McKinzie Field.  Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 6 against Martin Luther.
