Coach's Cornerweek five
October 1, 2007
The Eureka Red Devils got their first win of the season on Saturday against a good Concordia of Chicago team. There were many stand out players and I am going to use every inch of this weeks Coach's Corner to get them all in. As the offensive coordinator I will start with the side of the ball that controlled the clock for almost 39 of the 60 minutes played on Saturday. The offense was led by Nick Lindsey (Heritage HS-Homer, IL) who was 19 for 32 passing. He threw for 208 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions on the day. Nick also ran for 85 yards and two scores. After an injury to starting tailback Justin Dempsey (Chenoa HS--Fairbury, IL), Brett Dyer (Arcola HS--Hindsboro, IL) carried the ball for 70 yards and a touchdown of his own. Brad Polanin (Metamora HS-Metamora, IL) caught one of Nick's passes and rumbled in for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that put us up for good. There was only one sack on the day and this was a direct reflection on the outstanding play of the starting offensive line of James Albers (Mendota HS--Mendota, IL), Sean Smith (Mendota HS--Mendota, IL), Jordan Vignoni (Quartz Hill HS--Lancaster, CA), Keith Funk (Woodland HS--Manville, IL), and Brian Carver (Lanphier HS--Springfield, IL). The receiving corps was led by Drew Whightsil (Vandalia HS--Vandalia, IL) with 8 catches for 43 yards and one BIG fourth down conversion. There were also 5 other Red Devils with at least 25 receiving yards. Brad Polanin, Brett Dyer, Zach McDade (Arcola HS--Savoy, IL), Chris Wakid (Eureka HS--Danvers, IL), and Dillion Reed (Sangamon Valley HS--Illiopolis, IL).
Obviously, the offense could not have had the ball for so long if our defense did not get off the field in a hurry. They did that all day long, accentuated by their four interceptions. Matt Knake (Freeburg HS--Freeburg, IL) led the way with 9 tackles (3.5 for loss) and 1 interception. Cody Troutman (Normal Community HS--Bloomington, IL) added to his impressive season stats with 2 interceptions of his own and a fumble recovery. Kicker/ball hawk Jacob Wall (Cresent-Iroquois HS--Cresent City, IL) made 2 extra points and had 1 interception.
For the loyal followers of Red Devil Football....parents, alumni, friends....I do not need to tell you how big this win was for us. As strange as it may sound, it is easy for a coach to say "do this and do that" after a 0-70 loss. It is our challenge as a coaching staff to keep pushing, keep building, keep teaching and keep striving for that next win. We travel to Lakeland College in Wisconsin this Saturday. They are a very good football team. Their only loses this season have come by the hands of two Division III powerhouses. We will enter this week of practice with a newfound sense of confidence, a taste in our mouths of victory, but also with the fire in our belly to continue to prove that Saturday was not a flash in the pan.
Please keep checking the Coach's Corner this year and if you have any questions let me know. I can be reached at msmiley@eureka.edu.
