Coach's Corner

week eight

October 23, 2007

Eureka family, friends, alumni, and recruits--

Hopefully a lot of you came out to see the game this weekend against Benedictine. That was a very good team in our conference and we played along side of them the entire game. As in any game there were highs and lows throughout the day. Some of the high points were great catches by Drew Whightsil (Vandalia HS--Vandalia, IL) and Cody Troutman (Normal Community HS--Bloomington, IL). That is right...the same Cody Troutman that leads our team in interceptions made an appearance on the offensive side of the ball and had a couple good plays. Also making a big switch this week was one of our captains Raul Mendoza (Arcola HS--Arcola, IL). Raul switched from defensive line to offensive line and played all 50 snaps. He also made the key block when Nick Lindsey (Heritage HS--Homer, IL) scored on a rushing TD in the first half.

The defense stepped up holding a very good Benedictine offense to only 21 points even though they had to work on a short field for most of the day. The defense made an outstanding goal line stand in the fourth quarter. Benedictine went for it on fourth and goal from the one inch line and the Eureka defense held strong! Michael Moseley (Monterey HS--Lubbock, TX) had a big day from his middle linebacker position recording 15 tackles and 4.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Another personal best was set by punter Kyle Edgar (Arcola HS--Arcola, IL) with a punt of 71 yds.

This week is Homecoming. We are facing Aurora College, who is historically a very strong team. We have our work cut out for us, but we are confident that if we continue to take positive steps we will finish this season strong. Thanks to all the recruits that were able to make it out last week and I look forward to meeting those of you who are coming this Saturday.

Keep checking the Coach's Corner this year and if you have any questions let me know. I can be reached at msmiley@eureka.edu.
