Eureka College blitzed by Vikings 34-6

Eureka College lost to the North Park University Vikings 34-6 for the second straight year in a non-conference football game Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils (0-2) did not turn the ball over on the day, but managed just two second half first downs and 132 yards in the game. Eureka's first drive provided the best chance to score. After North Park (1-1) had taken the opening series 63 yards on nine lays leading to a Quentin Wright seven yard touchdown run, EC took over on its own 30. Eureka picked up three first downs, but senior quarterback Shaun Manning's (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest) third down pass to freshman Samuel Hendricks (Danvers, Ill./U-High) came up one yard shy of first down yardage at the Vikings 12. On the tenth play of the drive, the 29 yard field goal attempt by Jacob Wall (Cresent City, Ill./Cresent-Iroquois) sailed wide left.

The EC defense did well to hold North Park to a pair of Jesse Reyes field goals in the second quarter. The Vikings twice had a first-and-goal situation, but both times had to settle for short kicks. Reyes connected from 27 and 25 yards making the halftime score 13-0 North Park.

The Vikings tallied two touchdowns in the third quarter to extend the lead to 27-0, but had a third red zone possession stopped by a Wayne O'Harrow (Crete, Ill./Bloom Trail) interception.

Eureka got on the board mid-way through the final quarter on a 31 yard punt return by freshman Cody Troutman (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Comm.). The point after kick attempt was no good. North Park came back on the following possession with a 11 play, 66 yard drive capped by Kelvyn West's five yard scoring run, which ended the scoring at 34-6.

Troutman registered 135 yards on six returns in addition to three tackles and two pass breakups. Justin Dempsey (Fairbury, Ill./Chenoa) and Zach McDade (Savoy, Ill./Arcola) recorded 42 and 41 rushing yards respectively for Eureka. EC attempted just eight passes, completing five for 33 yards. The Red Devils went 1-for-11 on third down conversions, which is somewhat deceiving given that three converted third downs were called back by penalties. EC was flagged nine times for 62 yards.

North Park out-gained Eureka 374-132, scoring of five of six red zone chances. Pat O'Conner led the Vikings with 116 yards rushing on 11 carries. Brandon Watts caught seven passes for 110 yards.

Eureka begins conference play and its home schedule Saturday, Sept. 23 with a 1:00 pm kickoff against Concordia University (WI).
