Three make conference All-Academic team

MEQUON, Wis. — Three Red Devil football players earned All-Academic Team status by the Illini-Badger Football Conference following the 2007 season. Those athletes were Sean Smith (Mendota, Ill./HS), Jacob Wall (Cresent City, Ill./Cresent-Iroquois) and Luke Whitaker (Eureka, Ill.).

Smith and Wall were each named IBFC All-Academic last season. A junior, Smith played on the line both offensively and defensively for Eureka College this year. He began the season at offensive guard and started over half the games at that position before switching over to defensive line.

A senior, Wall served as defensive back and kicker for the Red Devils. He converted eight extra points and one field goal, placing fifth on the team with 11 points. Wall was also responsible for kickoffs as Eureka ranked second nationally in NCAA Division III by allowing just 12.4 yards per kickoff return. On defense, he ranked second on the team with two interceptions, and had 16 tackles.

Whitaker played linebacker and defensive line, recording 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He thrived late in the season, saving 15 of his tackles for the final four games.

The IBFC All-Academic Team recognizes letter-winning athletes from member schools that have achieved junior or senior academic standing with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average.
