Matt Knake named SLIAC defensive player of the week
The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named Eurka College junior Matt Knake (Freeburg, Ill./HS) as its Defensive Player of the Week for week five of the football season.
This is the first award for Knake from the SLIAC after also garnering player of the week honors last season when Eureka was a member of the Illini-Badger Conference. The junior linebacker amassed a game-high 14 tackles (eight solo, six assisted) in a 26-13 Eureka (2-2, 1-1 SLIAC) win at Blackburn last Saturday. He also created a fumble and recovered two of the three fumbles EC forced Blackburn to turn over on the day. Knake also was credited with 3.5 tackles for loss.
After leading the Red Devils in tackles for the past three contests, Knake has moved into second place in the SLIAC and 22nd in the country with 11.5 tackles per game. In addition, he leads the conference in tackles for loss (1.5/game). As a team, the Red Devils have the third ranked defense in the SLIAC. They will host Huntingdon College in the teams' first ever meeting Saturday, October 11 for a Noon kickoff.
