Tieman, White garner SLIAC Player of the Week honors

Two Eureka College freshmen have received Player of the Week accolades from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following the Red Devils' 47-34 loss to MacMurray in week eight of the college football season. Matt Tieman (Champaign, Ill./St. Thomas More) took the award for defense and Joe White (Manito, Ill./Concordia) was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Tieman is the third different Red Devil to garner Defensive Player of the Week honors from the SLIAC in the last four weeks. The 6-0, 213 pound linebacker-turned-defensive lineman made his first start at defensive tackle for EC, recording a career-high nine tackles (six solo, three assisted) and four tackles for loss versus MacMurray.

As a team, Eureka (3-4, 2-3 SLIAC) matched its average for the season with eight tackles for loss on the day. The aggressive Red Devils defense features four players ranked in the top 10 in the SLIAC and is ranked 26th in the country in tackles for loss. The league's No. 13 ranked tackler averaging six per game for 42 on the season, Tieman is ranked eighth in the conference with eight tackles for loss. He has started all seven games thus far for Eureka, which has the top ranked red zone defense in the conference.

White, a 6-0, 152 pound first-year wide receiver, led all players Saturday with a career-high 206 all purpose yards. He had four kickoff returns for a total of 100 yards and a long of 33. He set up the EC offense at the Eureka 41 or better three times.

White also hauled in five passes for a career-high 105 yards and two touchdowns as Eureka accumulated back-to-back 30+ point games for the first time since 1995. He leads the Red Devils with five receiving touchdowns and has averaged 18.6 yards on 11 kickoff returns on the season.

Eureka has two games remaining. The next opponent will be LaGrange College in LaGrange, Ga. Saturday at Noon central time.
