Eureka College to Host Fall Scrimmages This Weekend
Eureka, Ill
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College athletics department will kick off its fall sports season this Friday with the first of three scrimmages on campus this weekend. The EC volleyball team will host its Maroon and Gold scrimmage Friday at 7 p.m. at the Reagan Center, followed by a football scrimmage Saturday at 1 p.m. at McKinzie Field. The soccer program will host its inaugural scrimmage Sunday at Traister Field at 2 p.m.
The volleyball team will start the weekend’s activities with a 7 p.m. scrimmage at the Reagan Center. Third-year head coach Sandi Kelley plans to split the Red Devils into two squads for the contest. Fans can attend the event with no admission charge, and Eureka College volleyball t-shirts will be on sale.
The football portion of the weekend will feature a controlled scrimmage Saturday at 1 p.m. Both starters and backups will take part in several offensive series throughout the exhibition. There will be no charge for the event that will showcase each of the 59 players on the roster under first-year head coach Kurt Barth.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams will take center stage Sunday on the newly renovated pitch at Traister Field. The women’s team, returning nine starters from a nine-win team in 2008, will get things started at 2 p.m. The men’s team will follow with a scrimmage at 3:30 p.m. A full concession stand, as well as Eureka soccer merchandise, will be available during the event. There will be no charge for admission.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the faculty, staff, students and community to get their first look at the Red Devils in 2009,” EC Director of Athletics Paul Bryant said. “All of our student-athletes have worked very hard since arriving on campus earlier this month and we’re thrilled to showcase their talents before the real games begin.”
Regular season contests are slated to begin Tuesday, Sept. 1. The men’s soccer team will host Lincoln Christian at 4 p.m., while the volleyball team will play back-to-back matches at the Reagan Center against Rose-Hulman and Knox starting at 5 p.m. The cross country team is the lone EC fall team to open the season on the road, participating in a meet hosted by Millikin on Sept. 1 at 5:30 p.m. The football team opens the season Saturday, Sept. 5 at McKinzie Field versus Knox at 1 p.m.
