Beverly, Schmidgall Earn UMAC Weekly Honors
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College football team earned a pair of weekly awards from the UMAC on Tuesday when junior cornerback Rosney Beverly (Los Angeles, Calif./Normal West H.S.) was named the UMAC South Division Defensive Player of the Week, and sophomore wideout Wes Schmidgall (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) was named the UMAC South Division Offensive Player of the Week. The duo helped the Red Devils run away with a 63-44 UMAC South Division win at MacMurray last Saturday.
Beverly made a game-high six solo tackles and returned an interception 19 yards for his first career touchdown to give Eureka a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter. The interception was the fifth of his career and team-leading third of the season.
Schmidgall turned in a career day for the Eureka offense, catching nine balls and setting new career-bests with 211 yards and three touchdowns. His effort helped Eureka to its highest-scoring output since a 68-7 victory over Dubuque in 1994. Schmidgall now leads the conference with 920 receiving yards and is second among UMAC players with 46 catches and 10 touchdowns.
The Red Devils are preparing for their first visit to the UMAC’s annual Dome Day, set to take place this Friday in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. The Red Devils will face UMAC North Division member St. Scholastica at 2 p.m. All nine UMAC teams will play during the 10th annual event that is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
