Eureka falls at concordia, 34-21

Box Score

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Eureka College senior quarterback Nick Lindsey (Homer, Ill./Heritage H.S.) had a big day through the air for the second consecutive week with 245 passing yards and two touchdowns, but the Eureka offense was plagued by four turnovers and the defense yielded 512 yards in a 34-21 loss to Concordia (Ill.), Saturday afternoon in River Forest, Ill.

For the second consecutive game, the Red Devils (1-1) wasted no time offensively with a touchdown on their first possession of the game.  After Eureka junior defensive back Rosney Beverly (Los Angeles, Calif./Normal West H.S.) intercepted Concordia’s Mike Marotta on the third play from scrimmage, the Red Devils capped a five-play, 55-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Lindsey to senior wide receiver Drew Whightsil (Vandailia, Ill./Vandailia H.S.) for a 7-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived, as the Cougars (2-0) tied the game at 7-7 later in the quarter on a 44-yard strike from Marotta to Mike Egebrecht.  It appeared the Cougars would take the lead later in the quarter when the hosts put together a drive that lasted more than six minutes, but Eureka sophomore linebacker Doug Butler (Saybrook, Ill./Ridgeview H.S.) intercepted Marotta at the Eureka 1-yard line to stop the threat with 3:17 remaining before intermission.  The Red Devils threatened to take the lead on the ensuing possession, but freshman quarterback Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) was intercepted by Jarin Davis deep in Concordia territory.

Following a Concordia punt and a Eureka turnover on downs in the final minute of the half, Marotta connected with Nate Bahr for a 24-yard touchdown score with 0:43 left to give Concordia a 14-7 lead at halftime.

The Cougars stretched their lead to 21-7 on their second possession of the second half, taking advantage of excellent field position and scoring on a 30-yard toss from Marotta to Terrence Miller with 7:59 left in the third.  After a fumble on Eureka’s first play from scrimmage following the score, setting up a six-play, 41-yard scoring drive and a 28-7 Concordia lead when Marotta threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day to Savonte Hunt.

The Red Devils battled back, scoring two more times in the form of a rushing touchdown from senior running back Chris Wakid (Danvers, Ill./Eureka H.S.) and another touchdown catch from Whightsil, but Marotta capped his stellar performance with his fifth touchdown pass of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter.  Marotta finished the day with 343 yards through the air.

Lindsey was 20-for-32 passing for 245 yards for Eureka.  Wakid led the Red Devils on the ground with 69 yards on 19 carries and his third quarter touchdown.  Sophomore defensive back Mike Minehan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) made a game-high nine tackles, including seven unassisted stops.

The Red Devils will return home on Saturday, Sept. 19 to host UMAC North Division foe Martin Luther at 2 p.m. at McKinzie Field.  With the UMAC using a divisional format through 2009, Saturday’s contest will not be considered a league game.
