Eureka Football to Host Crown For Senior Day
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College football team will play its final game of the 2009 season on Saturday, hosting UMAC North Division member Crown at noon at McKinzie Field. The football team will honor 16 seniors playing their final game for the Red Devils in a ceremony prior to kickoff.
Eureka (4-5) enters Saturday’s game coming off back-to-back victories for the first time this season. A win on Saturday against Crown would give Eureka a 5-5 overall record, the first time the Red Devils have finished at the .500 mark or better since the 1997 team finished 5-5. The Red Devils are also looking for their first three-game win streak since Eureka closed the 1997 season with a win and started the 1998 season 2-0. Eureka has not won three games in a row in the same season since the 1995 team closed the season with seven consecutive wins.
Facing a 20-7 halftime deficit in last week’s Dome Day game against St. Scholastica, senior quarterback Nick Lindsey (Homer, Ill./Heritage H.S.) found sophomore wide receiver Wes Schmidgall (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) with touchdown throws on each of Eureka’s first two possessions of the second half to jump in front of the Saints, 21-20. The defense didn’t budge in the second half, recovering a pair of fumbles and forcing St. Scholastica to punt on its final three possessions of the game to hold on for a 21-20 win.
Crown (3-6) has lost three games in a row coming into Saturday’s game, including a 68-62 overtime loss to UMAC South Division member MacMurray at Dome Day last Friday. The Purple Storm owns victories over Macalester, Trinity Bible and Minnesota-Morris this season. The Crown offense is scoring a UMAC-high 36.4 points per game this season, but the defense has allowed 40.2 points per game, the highest total in the UMAC.
The 16 seniors and their parents will be recognized during a ceremony 15 minutes prior to kickoff. The Red Devils are shooting for their first Senior Day victory since a 53-20 win over Concordia (Ill.) on Nov. 6, 1999.
