Lindsey Earns Second UMAC Weekly Honor
EUREKA, Ill. – For the second time through the season’s first three weeks, Eureka College senior quarterback Nick Lindsey (Homer, Ill./Heritage H.S.) has been named the UMAC South Division Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Lindsey recorded 410 yards of total offense in Eureka’s 41-34 come-from-behind win over Martin Luther last Saturday.
Lindsey helped engineer three touchdown drives in the final eight minutes of Saturday’s game, completing an improbable comeback after the Red Devils trailed by 13 points with 7:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. His 32-yard strike to sophomore Wes Schmidgall (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) tied the game with 2:00 left, while his 5-yard toss to Schmidgall with 0:14 left won the game for the Red Devils.
Lindsey received the same award after Eureka’s 28-13 win over Knox to open the season. It’s the fourth offensive player of the week award of Lindsey’s career after he earned the same honor once from the Illini-Badger Conference in 2007 and once from the SLIAC in 2008.
With three games in the books in 2009, Lindsey’s offensive numbers are ranking among the nation’s best at the NCAA Division III level. The senior signal-caller ranks ninth in the country and leads the UMAC with 343.3 yards of total offense per game and 32nd overall in Division III passing efficiency with a rating of 156.2.
As a whole, the EC offense is ranked 20th in the nation and leads the UMAC in total offense per game at 471.7. Lindsey and freshman backup Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) have combined for 314.7 passing yards per game, leading the UMAC and ranking 13th nationally. Schmidgall is ranked eighth in Division III with 139.7 receiving yards per game. The Eureka offensive line has also been solid, ranking tied for 12th nationally with only 0.3 sacks allowed per game.
Defensively, senior cornerback Cody Troutman (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S.) has three interceptions through three games, putting him in a fifth place tie nationally at one interception per game. Senior linebacker Matt Knake (Freeburg, Ill./Freeburg H.S.) is averaging 11.7 tackles per game, placing him 20th nationally.
The Red Devils will hit the road this Saturday against Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., their fourth consecutive non-conference game to open the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
