Red Devils Welcome Westminster for homecoming game
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College football team will host its annual homecoming game on Saturday when the Westminster Blue Jays visit McKinzie Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Eureka enters the contest with a 2-3 overall record and an 0-1 mark in UMAC South Division play.
The Red Devils dropped a 20-13 decision to Greenville last week to open conference play. Senior quarterback Nick Lindsey (Homer, Ill./Heritage H.S.) racked up 149 yards through the air and 97 more on the ground, but a failed onside kick attempt after a 2-yard touchdown run from Lindsey ended Eureka’s comeback bid in the final moments of the contest.
Westminster has yet to play a UMAC South Division opponent this season, but did turn in a 51-14 win at UMAC North Division member Minnesota-Morris last month. The Westminster offense is averaging 36.8 points per game this season behind 995 yards of total offense from senior quarterback Daniel Eidson. This week’s UMAC South Division Offensive Player of the Week, Eidson dominated NAIA member Haskell Indian Nations (Kan.) with 308 passing yards and six touchdowns in a 47-14 win last Saturday.
Saturday’s contest is the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The Blue Jays handed Eureka a 42-25 defeat in Fulton, Mo. last season. Westminster previously played as a member of the SLIAC from 1996-99 before the league suspended football competition in 1999. After two years as an independent, Westminster played in the UMAC from 2002-2007, winning back-to-back league titles in 2003 and 2004. Westminster left the UMAC when the SLIAC revived football competition in 2008, but returned to the UMAC South Division this fall with previous SLIAC foes Eureka, Greenville and MacMurray when the SLIAC again dropped football.
The football game is one of several scheduled homecoming activities Saturday in Eureka. The homecoming parade along College Avenue is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by an alumni luncheon in the Dickinson Commons at 11 a.m. Following an induction ceremony Friday night at the Becker Auditorium, the 2009 Eureka College Hall of Fame class will be recognized on McKinzie Field at halftime of the football game. The Old Elm Trophy, presented to the most outstanding student organization during homecoming week, will be awarded after the third quarter of the football game, and Chicago’s OD TAPO IMI will present a free concert at the Rinker Amphitheater following the football game.
