Wisconsin-Stout Runs Past Eureka, 40-6

Box Score

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Eight Wisconsin-Stout players combined to carry the ball 43 times for 345 yards, helping the Blue Devils to a 40-6 non-conference victory over Eureka College, Saturday afternoon at Don & Nona Williams Stadium in Menomonie, Wis.

The Blue Devils (3-0) scored on each of their first two possessions and added a safety with 5:55 remaining in the first quarter to race to a 16-0 lead and never looked back.  Antawan Walker caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ross Carey for Wisconsin-Stout’s first score and Carey later scored on a 34-yard run just two plays after the safety midway through the first quarter.

Eureka (2-2) struggled offensively before finally breaking through on its fifth possession when freshman kicker Travis Huber (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) connected on a 23-yard field goal attempt with 7:12 left in the first half, trimming Eureka’s deficit to 19-3.  The Blue Devils promptly responded with a 10-play, 64-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 23-yard touchdown run by Craig Warminski for a 26-3 advantage.

Wisconsin-Stout forced the Red Devils to go three-and-out on the ensuing possession, but freshman Wes Robinson (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S.) recovered a Walker fumble on a punt return to give Eureka possession at midfield with 0:32 remaining in the half.  A roughing the passer penalty negated an interception on third-and-15, moving the Red Devils down to the Wisconsin-Stout 30-yard line.  Senior quarterback Nick Lindsey (Homer, Ill./Heritage H.S.) completed a six-yard pass to sophomore Wes Schmidgall (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) down to the 24-yard line with time running down, setting up another Huber field goal as time expired in the first half with the Blue Devils in front, 26-6.  Huber’s second successful attempt was from 41 yards away.

On the first possession of the third quarter, the Blue Devils needed only five plays to stretch their lead to 33-6 when Carlos Concepcion scored on a 2-yard touchdown run.  Ron Fricke scored the final Wisconsin-Stout touchdown of the day with a 13-yard touchdown run on the third play of the fourth quarter.

The Red Devils carried the ball into Wisconsin-Stout territory only one time on its five possessions in the second half.  Eureka converted on only two of its 15 third down opportunities during the afternoon.

Lindsey threw for a season-low 113 yards on 13-for-20 passing.  Freshman Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) saw action for the third straight game and was 7-for-16 for 78 yards and an interception.  Eureka finished the day with negative-59 yards rushing, a new school record for Wisconsin-Stout’s defense.  Schmidgall, who entered the game ranked ninth nationally in receiving yards per game at 139.7, pulled down six catches for 68 yards.  Sophomore strong safety Mike Minehan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) led the EC defense with 6.0 tackles.

Eureka will play its first UMAC South Division game on Saturday, Oct. 3 when Greenville visits McKinzie Field at noon.
