Eureka Football Adds Four For 2012
EUREKA, Ill. – Fourth-year Eureka College football head coach Kurt Barth announced the addition of four new student-athletes to the EC football program on Friday afternoon. Defensive lineman Darian Daniel (Marion, Ill./Marion H.S.), quarterback Will Hansen (Mendota, Ill./Mendota H.S.), defensive back Zack Myers (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon H.S.) and offensive lineman Hayden Ward (Herscher, Ill./Herscher H.S.) will join the Red Devils for the 2012 season with four years of football eligibility.
Daniel contributed as a starter on the defensive line for head coach Kerry Martin at Marion High School. Daniel helped the Wildcats to a 7-3 record, an appearance in the IHSA 5A playoffs and a share of the South Seven Conference championship as a senior in 2011. Marion also won the outright league title during Daniel’s junior season in 2010 and earned state playoff berths in 2009 and 2010.
Hansen will join the Eureka football program after a decorated prep career for head coach John McKenzie at Mendota High School. Hansen earned All-West Central Conference First Team honors at quarterback for the Trojans during a senior season that included a share of the league title and an appearance in the second round of the IHSA 4A playoffs.
Myers played prep football for head coach Troy Johnson at Mattoon High School and finished his senior season as the second-leading tackler for the Green Wave. The 5-foot-10 safety made 64 tackles to go along with two interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries. His effort in 2011 resulted in an All-Wabash Valley First Team choice and Honorable Mention from the Big 12 Conference and The Decatur Herald and Review All-Area Team. He was selected for the 2012 All-Wabash Valley All-Star game and also excelled in the classroom, qualifying for the 2010 Wabash Valley All-Academic Team.
In addition to his success on the gridiron, Myers won 79 matches for the Green Wave in four wrestling seasons, including a runner-up finish at 152 pounds at the Big 12 Conference meet in 2011.
Ward will add to the Red Devils’ depth on the offensive line in 2012. He played high school football for head coach Dan Wetzel at Herscher High School, serving as the Tigers’ team captain and earning the squad’s most valuable lineman award as a senior in 2011.
As a member of NCAA Division III, Eureka College does not offer athletic scholarships and recruits do not sign athletic grants. The Red Devils will begin the 2012 season at Knox on Saturday, Sept. 1 in Galesburg, Ill.
