EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College football team will try to win consecutive games for the first time since the 2009 season when the Red Devils travel north to Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Martin Luther at the 11th annual Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Dome Day in the Metrodome. Eureka is 1-0 all-time at Dome Day, earning a 21-20 victory over St. Scholastica in last season’s event.
The Red Devils (1-6, 1-3 UMAC) are one week removed from their first victory of the season, a 40-14 win over UMAC foe Northwestern (Minn.). Sophomore quarterback Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) earned the league’s Offensive Player of the Week award after throwing for 289 yard and five touchdowns on a wet field and leading the Red Devils to their best offensive output of the season. The Eureka defense was also solid last weekend, yielding a season-low 14 points and holding the Eagles to 48 rushing yards on 29 carries.
Martin Luther (4-3, 3-2 UMAC) enters Saturday’s game riding back-to-back conference victories over Minnesota-Morris and Westminster, but has not played since Oct. 16. The Knights feature a high-powered offense that ranks second in the UMAC with 350.7 yards per game and join Greenville as the only two teams in the league to average more yards on the ground (244.1) than through the air (106.6). Senior quarterback Greg Holzhueter ranks first among league quarterbacks with 81.4 rushing yards per game and second in total offense with 181.7 yards per game. The Knights’ two UMAC losses this season against Crown and Greenville have each been by a single point.
The two squads arguably played one of the most memorable contests in Eureka football history last season at McKinzie Field. Facing a 34-21 deficit midway through the fourth quarter, the Red Devils scored 20 points -- including a 10-play, 97-yard touchdown drive that took only 126 seconds -- in the final seven minutes of the game to earn a 41-34 victory over the Knights.
Eureka fans unable to make the trip will be able to follow the action on the official UMAC website, www.umacathletics.com. Driving directions, parking information and ticket prices will be available, as well as a free live video stream and live statistics of all five games. UMAC Sports Information Director Greg Johnson will provide a Dome Day blog throughout the two-day event that is scheduled to begin Friday at 4 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL: The Eureka volleyball team will take its final road trip of the 2010 season Saturday with back-to-back matches against Midwest Conference members Carroll and Ripon beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday in Ripon, Wis. The Red Devils are looking for their second three-game win streak of the season after earning consecutive five-set victories over Robert Morris-Peoria earlier this week. A sweep on Saturday would give the Red Devils their longest win streak since winning six straight late in the 2007 season.
SOCCER: The Eureka men’s and women’s soccer teams will be the lone EC squads remaining on campus this weekend, as both teams will host Senior Day during a 1 p.m. doubleheader against St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Webster. A total of nine seniors -- six women, three men -- will play their final game at Traister Field, including a group of five women’s players who have played together since the inception of the program at the Division III level in 2007. The women will play first at 1 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY: The Eureka cross country team will close its regular season at the 2010 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. at Hillsboro Country Club in Hillsboro, Ill.
