Football Prepares For Final Non-Conference Clash

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College football team will play its third and final non-conference game of the 2010 season when the Red Devils travel to visit Wisconsin-Stout this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Don & Nona Williams Stadium in Menomonie, Wis.

The Red Devils (0-2) will try to end a three-game skid dating back to last season and earn their first win of this season after dropping a 38-21 decision at St. Scholastica last Saturday in Duluth, Minn.  Junior tight end Alex Hess (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) ran for a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, but the Saints forced seven Eureka turnovers and scored 28 unanswered points on their way to the win.

Wisconsin-Stout (1-1) lost their season opener at Black Hills State (S.D.) in overtime on Sept. 3, 14-13, but recoverd for a 27-24 win over Jamestown (N.D.) in Menomonie last Saturday.  Junior running back Craig Warminski has been a force for the Blue Devils on the offensive side of the ball, averaging 215.5 all-purpose yards through the first two games to rank 13th overall in Division III.

Last season, eight Wisconsin-Stout players combined to carry the ball 43 times for 345 yards, helping the Blue Devils to a 40-6 victory over Eureka on Sept. 26, 2009, the first all-time meeting between the two schools.  In that contest, Eureka sophomore kicker Travis Huber (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) was 2-for-2 on field goal tries, including a 41-yard kick in the second half that was a personal career-best at the time.  The Red Devils also received 76 passing yards off the bench that day from sophomore quarterback Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.).

For the second consecutive week, Eureka fans unable to make the trip north will be able to follow the action live online.  The game will be broadcast live on the radio by WMEQ-AM 880 in Menomonie, Wis. and will also be available online through the station’s official website, www.wmeq.com.  Wisconsin-Stout also plans to broadcast a live online video stream and live statistics through its official athletics website, athletics.uwstout.edu.

VOLLEYBALL: The Eureka volleyball team will be the lone EC squad competing on campus this weekend.  The Red Devils (2-9, 0-1 SLIAC) will play three St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches in less than 24 hours in the Reagan Center, starting with a 7 p.m. match on Friday night against Westminster.  Four SLIAC teams will be in the building on Saturday for a quadrangular match that will begin at 11 a.m.  The Red Devils will play Blackburn first before hosting defending SLIAC champion Webster at 1:30 p.m.  Eureka already owns a three-set win over Blackburn in a non-conference match played on Sept. 4 in the Eureka College Invitational.

SOCCER: Both Eureka soccer teams will head to the Chicago suburb of Naperville, Ill. this weekend to take part in the 24th annual Sal Vacarro Tournament hosted by North Central.  Both teams will play North Central in the semifinals of the four-team tournament beginning Saturday.  The women (1-4-0) will play the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 6 p.m.  Both teams will play on Sunday in either the championship game or consolation round depending on Saturday’s outcomes.  For the Eureka men (1-4-0), Mount Mercy (Iowa) and Grinnell are potential Sunday opponents, while Mount Mercy or SLIAC member Fontbonne await the women’s team on Sunday.  Live statistics of all tournament games will be available online at www.northcentralcardinals.com.

CROSS COUNTRY: The Eureka cross country team will participate in its second meet of the 2010 season on Friday at 4:30 p.m., traveling to Normal, Ill. to participate in the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Illinois State University.  A total of 40 women’s teams and 39 men’s teams from across the state of Illinois will represent the three divisions of the NCAA, the NAIA and the NJCAA.
