Jake Carls Named UMAC Defensive Player of the Week
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Eureka College freshman linebacker Jake Carls (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley H.S.) has been chosen as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office Tuesday morning. Carls had 13 tackles and two interceptions in Eureka’s 42-21 league win over MacMurray in the season finale last Saturday.
Carls led the Red Devils with 13 total tackles on Saturday, and the two interceptions were the first two picks of his career. He led a Eureka defense that yielded 86 rushing yards and 303 yards of total offense from the Highlanders, Eureka’s second-best effort of the season in both categories. He nearly scored his first career touchdown on his second interception, returning the pick 44 yards before being tripped up at the 13-yard line as time expired in the first half.
Carls finished his first collegiate season with 98 total tackles to rank second on the team and fourth among all UMAC players. His average of 9.8 tackles per game ranked 54th nationally and his 7.5 total tackles for loss ranked 13th in the conference.
The Red Devils have now earned a total of four Player of the Week awards from the league this fall. Carls joins junior free safety Mike Minehan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./McKendree) and sophomore quarterback Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) as recipients of weekly awards from the UMAC this season.
