Sam Durley Named UMAC Offensive Player of the Week
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Eureka College sophomore quarterback Sam Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) has been named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday night. Durley threw for a career-high five touchdowns in Eureka’s 40-14 victory over Northwestern (Minn.) last Saturday.
Durley was 17-for-29 for 289 yards against the Eagles, the third consecutive week he’s completed at least 17 passes for at least 225 yards and a touchdown. He connected with junior Wes Schmidgall (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S./Culver-Stockton) for three scores in the first half and added two more to senior Dillon Reed (Illiopolis, Ill./Sangamon Valley H.S.). Durley’s final touchdown pass of the day was to Reed, capping a 16-play, 94-yard scoring drive that covered 9-minutes, 56-seconds, Eureka’s longest touchdown drive of the season.
Durley’s big day bumped his season passing average to 190.9 yards per game. That average ranks second in the UMAC and 86th nationally in Division III. His nine passing touchdowns ranks third in the nine-team UMAC.
The award for Durley marks the second consecutive week a Eureka football player has received weekly accolades from the UMAC and the third time overall. Junior free safety Mike Minehan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./McKendree) earned UMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 28 and again on Oct. 19.
The 11th annual UMAC Dome Day is up next for the Red Devils. Eureka will travel north to Minnesota for the third time this season and play Martin Luther in the Metrodome in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. this Saturday. The game marks the fifth and final game of the two-day event in the NFL venue. Eureka earned a 41-34 come-from-behind victory over the Knights last season in Eureka.
