UMAC Coaches Pick Eureka Football Eighth
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Eureka College football team has been picked to finish eighth in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference in 2011, according to a preseason coaches poll released by the league office Wednesday afternoon. Defending UMAC champion Greenville was picked unanimously to win the 10-team conference.
Despite losing 15 starters from last season’s undefeated UMAC championship squad, Greenville received nine of the 10 first-place votes while earning 81 points in the poll. St. Scholastica was chosen second and received the remaining first-place vote, while Minnesota-Morris, Martin Luther and Westminster rounded out the top five.
Eureka will play a full nine-game UMAC schedule for the first time since joining the conference in 2009, beginning with Eureka’s home opener against Crown on Sept. 17 at McKinzie Field. With the addition of Presentation (S.D.) and moving to a complete round-robin schedule, every UMAC team will play nine conference games in 2011 for the first time in the league’s history. The regular season conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Playoffs, also a first for the UMAC.
The Red Devils open their 108th season this Saturday night at Benedictine in Lisle, Ill., the only non-conference game of the 2011 season. Kickoff against the Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m. as the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
