Eureka opens 2009 slate with birdie barrage, 4th place finish
Eureka College took fourth place out of seven Division III varsity squads in the first men's golf tournament of the year last weekend at the Millikin University Spring Opener. Overall, the Red Devils were seventh place out of 11 teams entered in the event.
After carding a pair of top 10 finishes during the fall season, Narish Punjabi (Washington, Ill./HS) claimed his third top 10 in as many tournaments with an 11-over-par 155 (77-78). He led the Red Devils in both rounds, and ended in a tie for eighth place, just nine shots off medalist honors. Punjabi bagged six birdies over the two day event, tying for the tournament lead in that department.
Eureka received a strong effort from Matt Morse (Magnolia, Ill./Fieldcrest), who shot a +13 total of 157 (79-78). Morse tied for team-best honors in round two with a 78 en route to a tie for 13th place overall. He was stationed in 15th place after the first 18 holes. Morse also added five birdies to the Eureka cause as the Red Devils as a team tied for the most birdies in the tournament with 14.
Dan Cameron (Byron, Ill./HS) carded a pair of 84s to place third on the EC team with a total of 168. Other Red Devils with their first event of the spring were T.J. Schopp (LeRoy, Ill./HS) (182) and Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill./HS) (185).
Eureka will contend with several of its conference rivals in the next scheduled tournament hosted by Webster University March 29-30 in St. Louis.
