Eureka wins St. Francis Tourney with season-Best 307
The Eureka men's golf team won the University of St. Francis Invitational Tuesday, beating out seven other teams in an 18-hole tournament held at Inwood Golf Course in Joliet. Despite playing in cold conditions, the Red Devils carded a team score of 307, representing a 5-stroke improvement over their previous best score this spring.
The championship went down to the wire as Eureka slid by the hosts from St. Francis by a single shot. St. Francis had beaten Eureka by 10 shots in its home event during the fall season in which EC took seventh place and St. Francis second.
Narish Punjabi (Washington, Ill./HS) and Matt Morse (Magnolia, Ill./Fieldcrest), who both registered top 10 finishes in the fall season on the same course, again led the Red Devils Tuesday. Punjabi recorded a back-nine 35 en route to a 1-over-par 72 to finish in second place out of 43 total competitors, just two shots off medalist honors. Morse carded the best front-nine score for EC with a 36 as he posted the third lowest score on the day with a 3-over 74.
Two other EC golfers tallied their lowest rounds of the year. Brady Wildenradt (Delavan, Ill./HS) had a 37 on the front-nine during his round of 79 to wind up in a tie for 13th, while Dan Cameron (Byron, Ill./HS) shot an 82 to take 27th. T.J. Schopp (LeRoy, Ill./HS) posted an 84 to take 30th to round out the Eureka lineup. The scoring average on the day for all players was 81.8.
The third and fourth place teams were not far behind, either. Olivet Nazarene University finished four shots back at 311 and Elmhurst College took fourth eight shots back at 315.
Next up for Eureka is the SLIAC Golf Championships to be held at The Falls Golf Course in O'Fallon, Missouri April 20-21. All seven SLIAC teams will be competing with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
